  EVALUATE THE SITUATION

Introduction to problem solving

Problems such as aggression, digging, barking, jumping, housebreaking, mouthing etc. can be modified. However caution should be taken when dealing with issues where dogs are resistant to change, or where high levels of prey drive are present.

Cause of the problems

The general cause of behavioral problems in pets is a lack of control. With the hectic lives we live, owners and their families do not devote enough time to teaching their pets what is acceptable and what is not acceptable behavior.

Animals are expected to just know.

In training we have an expression:
"You create the pattern!"
This means by allowing something to happen, and not addressing it in time, or not at all, the animal thinks it is okay. It is thus "created" or established.

Identification

The first step to correcting bad or wrong behavior is to identify the cause of the problem.
Is it intentional misbehavior on the part of your pet?
Or is the pet just misunderstanding what you are looking for?
More often, your pet just doesn't understand. That's what you need to identify.

Foundation

The second step is to establish a foundation of trust and communication with your pet. Without a language whereby you can communicate, you are wasting your time. Dogs do not understand English, but they do understand body language and attitude.

Obedience

The way to establish a foundation of trust is through FOUNDATION training.
By teaching your pet to walk at heel, sit on command, down when told to and come when called, you are teaching them to understand you.
You are creating a FOUNDATION.
This allows them to comprehend when you are unhappy about something, instead of just assuming you have "lost it".

Socialization

The final step in correcting problem behavior is to spend more time with your pet. Teach them to ride in a car and take them places; meet other dog people, run or walk or cycle with your pet; let your kids participate in training sessions, etc.

Finally, remember that training is a tool in creating a better partnership between you and your pet.
Be realistic in your expectations, and give it time!

Also, some dogs require more attention than others. Don't be shy to get help. Many are in the same position you are, and good instructors know this.
Good luck, and have fun!
