SIGNS OF DANGER IN THE STRANGE DOGS

What are warning signs in strange dogs you don’t know, or have just met.

Animal behaviorist Leighton Oosthuisen of Partners Dog Training has provided the following as a public service guide into what may indicate a risk in a dog.  This guide is by no means exhaustive and other factors may be in play. Use extreme caution when dealing with aggression or you WILL be injured.
Consult Partners Dog Training (480 595 6700) if you have any questions.

What are warning signs in strange dogs you don’t know, or have just met.

  • Timid or “scared” behavior
  • Slinking away or into a corner
  • Security seeking behavior such as hiding under objects
  • Growling or snapping from a hidden position
  • Defensive behavior such as moving away
  • Displays insecurity when approached
  • Lies down or rolls over in fearful way
  • Urinates when spoke to or approached
  • Ears droops his ears flat
  • Will not make eye contact
  • Low growl, looks away
  • Growls and stares you down
  • Nips or snaps when attempting to touch
  • Lunges at you when approached

Please remember the following VERY important factors:

  • Dogs, no matter how domesticated, are still animals
  • Animals display behavior based on genetic history
  • Genetic behavior is based on “flight or fight”
  • Some dogs will display one or more signs
  • In some situations, there will be NO cues or warning signs
  • Medical or health issues sometimes influence a dogs behavior.
  • Use EXTREME caution when approaching an injured dog (or animal)
